History to Present

With records of an Ale House dating back to 1629, the Nags Head began trading under the ownership of John Briscowe. Since then there appears to have been around 25 licensees. The longest serving was William Pinnington, a licensee and blacksmith. He and his son, carried out their 'smithy work' for two generations. Sometime in the 1800s the Nags Head also became known locally as "The Flash" reasons apparently being the pond opposite, which was where thecildren used to meet, play and swim.

Our story, - In 1980 the Nags Head went up for auction, Debbie's parents attended, but were unsuccessful in their bid. As a consequence, their seach to find and buy an ideal freehold pub took them to a village only 15 miles from the Nags Head. That was where Debbie and her parents stayed for 21 years until January 2001.

With the opportunity for a fresh start & by coincidence the Nags Head once again on the market, a struggling business, in receivership and in much need of TLC. We know instantly this was the direction to follow.

On December 17th 2001, we were handed the keys. Rory & Debbie with much help from Lesley & Trevor, Debbie's parents & one staff member, began the work of rebuilding the reputation of this very very picturesque country pub.

It quickly became evident: development would be required to accommodate th increase in trade. By September 2003 work was completed on the 'Farriers' Restaurant, the conservatory, restroom facilities, kitchen and stores.

2 years on in September 2005 we had cause for double celebration.We were notified by the "Good Pub Guide" that we had won the title of "Cheshire Dining Pub of the Year" for 2006. This was a proud moment, as it is not a competition you enter, but one based on the opinions of anonymous visitors and assessors.

Also in September 2005, we launched Debbie's Family Board Game, "Cash Trap".

In just under 4 years the transformation was almost unbelievable, and is a credit to the dedication of our team and the continuous loyalty shown by all those who visit us.

Throught 2006 to present, we have been able to maintain our reputation as an establishment customers are happy to return and also recommend to others.

A global economic downturn in early 2008 is seeing many people take stock. Thankfully our large, loyal customer base, who appreciate all we have to offer, help to secure the ongoing success of the Nags Head.

September 2009 - Debbie's mind has been wandering again. Having written the words and a basic tune, suitable for an English Football Supporters song, Debbie, with the help of musically talented local people, has made a demo CD. It will be submitted to the FA for consideration as the official song to represent England in 2010. Hear the Song. Read the Football Song Story.

It is hoped we will be here for many, many more years to come.( A question we are frequently asked). We are committed to providing good quality food and service, in a warm and friendly atmosphere. The Nags Head is our home in which everyone is welcome.
